Industrial design, product design, and mechanical design are different but related. All three require a lot of people to work together, but few people can master these different tasks at the same time. So what is the difference among them?
Industrial design is essentially an appearance design. Design and express the appearance of industrial products, the positional relationship of features, materials, colors, and surface treatment methods, especially the expression of beauty. It is widely used in various industries such as industrial supplies, handicrafts, daily necessities and so on.
A truly outstanding industrial designer should not only have the creative skills, but also be familiar with the working principle, function realization method, internal structure, product realization process, manufacturing method, mold realization method and so on of the designed product. Only in this way, the designed product is reliable.
Product design generally refers to the design of the internal structure of the product, the design of the connection and positional relationship between the parts, and the realization of the function of the whole machine. There are also special cases. A small part of the product design also includes the appearance design, and then the structural design is fully covered.
Product designers also need to have a very comprehensive knowledge. Otherwise, the product cannot be realized, or there are many defects, such as the use of the product and the high production cost. In short, there is a huge difference between an excellent product and an inferior product in the eyes of professionals. The focus of product design lies in the appearance of the product, the level of detail workmanship, cost control, and so on. For example, the structure of mobile phone products is not complicated, but the quality level is quite high, because the designer has a good grasp of the details.
Mechanical design is generally used in non-standard automation equipment, mechanical equipment, robots and other industries, mainly focusing on products with more moving parts. Such products generally have the characteristics of complex machine, expensive unit price, relatively high technical content, and the production batch will not be too large. This position requires a solid foundation in mechanical principles, mechanical analysis, motion simulation, etc. Designers also need to understand the relevant knowledge of each component, which is a position with relatively high barriers to entry.
The focus of mechanical design products is on functional realization, reliability, performance parameters, etc., while the requirements for industrial design, user experience, appearance quality requirements, etc. are relatively low. For example, when designing a machine tool, its requirements for reliability and performance are quite high.
The above three different positions are related to each other but they are quite different. A product needs shape design and structural design. At this time, you must not only learn surface design, but also learn industrial design well, but also product design. If the product you want to design is some high-tech equipment, etc., then mechanical design is an indispensable skill.
