Membrane switches are popular electronic components. You can see them on electronic equipment, communication equipment, household appliances, etc. However, they sometimes have issues, or fail to work for some reasons. Let's talk about something about problems and troubleshooting.
1. Issues
Insensitive buttons / keys
Membrane switch may not respond when pressed, or the buttons / keys need more pressure.
Buttons / keys stuck or loose
Stuck or loose buttons / keys can't make the equipment work smoothly.
Malfunctioning buttons / keys
If it happens, the equipment has no action after the membrane switch is pressed.
2. Troubleshooting
We can do something to repair bad membrane switches.
Cleaning and lubricating
Membrane switches can't work well due to accumulation of dust, grease, or other contaminants. Use absolute alcohol or a special electronic cleaner to gently clean the surface and internal parts of membrane switch, which ensures that they are clean.
In addition, using some lubricants, such as oil or grease, in the appropriate location can improve the sensitivity and smoothness of the membrane switch.
Adjust flexibility of buttons / keys
Some buttons / keys are not sensitive, and need a large amount of force to press. It's OK to adjust the flexibility. Take apart membrane switch, and adjust the position of the spring or rubber gasket. The flexibility of the button can be increased or decreased so that it meets the requirements.
Replace button or spring
If the buttons are damaged, stuck, or loose, it's best to replace them.
Solve problems of circuit
Sometimes, problems can be caused by a loose or disconnected circuit. Make sure the circuit is OK. If you find problems, resolder or replace the connection parts.
Replace membrane switch
If you still can't solve the problem, the last option is to replace the membrane switch.
3. Maintenance
In addition to repairing membrane switches, you can also maintain them to prolong their service life.
Regular cleaning
Regular cleaning prevents dust and dirt from accumulating. Use absolute alcohol or a special electronic cleaner to gently wipe the surface and internal parts to ensure they are clean.
Treat membrane switch well
Don't press membrane switch too hard, or it damages the spring or trigger mechanism. Avoid frequently pressing membrane switch repeatedly to reduce mechanical wear and fatigue. If the membrane switch has to work with a high frequency, choose high-quality membrane switch with long service life.
Don't let the membrane switch work in humid or high-temperature environment.
Proper wiring and design
When installing and wiring, avoid external impact, pressure or tension. We need reasonable design to prevent the membrane switch from being squeezed, twisted or excessively bent.
Choose high-quality membrane switches
High-quality membrane switches have better mechanical strength, durability and stability, and can provide longer service life.
