Of all the tools in a screen printer's arsenal, the squeegee is perhaps the most critical. While screens, emulsions, and inks are essential, it is the humble squeegee that performs the final, decisive action of transferring an image to a substrate. Understanding its components, specifications, and proper use is fundamental to achieving high-quality, consistent prints.


1. Working Principle


At its core, a squeegee's job is to force ink through the open areas of a stencil on a mesh screen and onto the printing surface below. The process involves a combination of three key factors: angle, pressure, and speed. The printer holds the squeegee at a consistent angle (typically around 75 degrees) and pulls or pushes it across the screen with even pressure. This action accomplishes two things simultaneously:


It forces the ink through the mesh openings.


The sharp edge of the squeegee blade "shears" the ink, cleanly clearing the screen behind it and leaving a uniform deposit on the substrate.


2. Material


A squeegee consists of two main parts: the blade and the handle.


The blade is the most important component and is almost universally made from polyurethane. This synthetic rubber polymer is prized for its exceptional durability, chemical resistance, and ability to be manufactured to precise hardness levels. Before polyurethane became the industry standard, blades were made from natural rubber, which was less resistant to the solvents in inks and wore down quickly.


The handle, or holder, is typically made of wood or aluminum. Wooden handles are traditional, comfortable to hold, and economical. However, they can absorb solvents and warp over time. Aluminum handles are more durable, easier to clean, and remain straight, making them the preferred choice for professional and high-volume printing operations.



3. Key Technical Specifications


Choosing the right squeegee requires understanding its technical properties, primarily its durometer and blade profile.


3.1 Durometer (Hardness)


Durometer is the measurement of the blade's hardness, indicated by a number followed by the letter 'A'. The scale typically ranges from 50A (very soft) to 90A (very hard). The hardness of the blade directly affects the amount of ink deposited.


Soft Squeegees (60A-70A)


These blades flex more, pushing more ink through the screen. They are ideal for printing on textured fabrics, laying down thick ink layers (like for glitter inks), or when maximum opacity is needed.


Medium Squeegees (70A-80A)


This is the most common, all-purpose range. A 75A durometer squeegee offers a great balance between ink control and deposit, making it suitable for the vast majority of jobs, from t-shirts to posters.


Hard Squeegees (80A-90A)


A stiffer blade deposits a thinner, more precise layer of ink. It's the best choice for printing fine details, halftone dots, four-color process (CMYK), and for use with thinner inks like UV or solvent-based inks on substrates like glass or metal.


Some squeegees feature a triple durometer blade (e.g., 75/90/75), which has a hard core for rigidity and support, flanked by softer edges for a smooth print stroke.


3.2 Blade Profile (Edge Shape)


The shape of the blade's edge also influences the print result.


Square Edge


Also called a straight edge, this is the most common profile used for general printing on flat surfaces. A sharp square edge is crucial for crisp prints.


Round Edge (Bullnose)


This profile deposits a much heavier layer of ink because its rounded surface "plows" more ink through the mesh. It's used for special applications, such as printing adhesives or specialty inks on highly absorbent textiles.


Beveled Edge (V-Cut)


The sharp point of a beveled squeegee offers excellent control and is primarily used for printing on curved or irregular surfaces, like bottles and containers.
