How Photosensitive Emulsion Works in Silkscreen Printing

Silkscreen printing, or serigraphy, is a versatile printing technique celebrated for its ability to produce vibrant, durable designs on a vast array of materials. At the heart of this process is the stencil, which defines the image to be printed.


While early stencils were hand-cut, modern screen printing relies on a remarkable photochemical process using photosensitive emulsion to create incredibly detailed and precise stencils. Understanding how this material works is key to mastering the craft.


What Is Photosensitive Emulsion?


Photosensitive emulsion is a light-sensitive, viscous liquid designed to be coated onto the screen mesh. It's typically a two-part system consisting of:


Polymer Emulsion


This is the base of the mixture, often made from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or similar polymers. In its liquid state, it's soluble in water.


Sensitizer


This is a chemical (commonly a diazo compound or a photopolymer) that, when mixed with the emulsion, makes the entire solution reactive to ultraviolet (UV) light.


Before exposure to light, the emulsion is a uniform liquid that can be spread evenly across the screen's mesh, filling the tiny apertures. This coating process must be done in a light-safe environment, typically under yellow light, as the emulsion will begin to react if exposed to UV rays, which are present in daylight and standard white light.


Core Principle: Photopolymerization


The working principle of photosensitive emulsion hinges on a chemical reaction called photopolymerization. In simple terms, this means using light (photo) to cause small molecules (monomers) to link together into long chains (polymers), changing the substance from a liquid or semi-liquid into a solid.


When the sensitizer in the emulsion is struck by UV light photons, it undergoes a chemical change. This change initiates a chain reaction within the polymer emulsion.


The individual polymer molecules begin to cross-link, forming a strong, interconnected network. This new, dense structure is not only solid and durable but, crucially, becomes insoluble in water.


Think of it like a liquid glue that remains wet in the dark but hardens instantly when a specific type of flashlight (UV light) is shined on it.


Once hardened, you can no longer wash it away with water. The parts that remained in the dark, however, can be rinsed off easily.



From Exposure to Stencil


Creating the stencil involves a few precise steps that leverage this light-hardening principle.


1. Exposure


After the emulsion is coated on the screen and has dried completely, a film positive is placed on top of it. A film positive is a transparent sheet with the desired design printed in opaque, black ink. This assembly is then placed in an exposure unit, which blasts it with a powerful, controlled UV light source.


2. Selective Hardening


The UV light passes through the clear areas of the film positive and strikes the emulsion beneath. In these areas, photopolymerization occurs, and the emulsion hardens, bonding firmly to the mesh.


The black ink on the film positive blocks the UV light from reaching the emulsion directly below it. In these "image" areas, the emulsion remains unexposed and in its original, water-soluble state.


3. Developing


The screen is then taken to a washout booth and sprayed with water. The hardened, cross-linked emulsion (the non-image area) is now impervious to water and stays locked in the mesh. Conversely, the unexposed emulsion that was shielded by the design washes out easily, leaving open areas in the mesh.


The result is a perfect, durable stencil. The open areas correspond exactly to the design, allowing ink to be pushed through with a squeegee, while the hardened emulsion blocks the ink from passing through the rest of the screen.


This elegant photochemical process is the foundation that allows screen printers to transfer complex art to substrate with exceptional accuracy and repeatability.
