Working Principle

A Clamp-on Ultrasonic Flow Meter measures flow by utilizing the propagation characteristics of ultrasonic waves through a flowing liquid. It determines the flow velocity and calculates the corresponding flow rate without interrupting the process or cutting the pipeline.

A pair of ultrasonic transducers is clamped onto the outside surface of the pipe. One transducer acts as the transmitter, while the other serves as the receiver. The transmitter periodically emits ultrasonic pulses that travel through the pipe wall and the flowing liquid to the receiving transducer.

As the liquid flows, it affects the transit time of the ultrasonic signals. By accurately measuring the transit time difference between ultrasonic waves traveling with the flow and against the flow (transit-time method), and combining this information with parameters such as the speed of sound in the fluid and the pipe dimensions, the flow meter calculates the average flow velocity. Based on this velocity, it determines both the instantaneous flow rate and the totalized flow.
